Response to Jency Shirai

  1. Today I leaned a lot more about sex trafficking. I had a vague idea what sex trafficking was, but it was good to learn more about it from a good source. It was also interesting to hear about Jency's group visit to India and how they helped. Learning about nonprofit organizations that actually take effective actions to help people was refreshing as well. I also thought it was nice how the women were so proud of the bags and jewelry they made. It's a good idea to not only bring the women out of a horrible life, but to also provide them with a job and teach them a craft.

  2. I enjoyed hearing from her because it came from a perspective of someone who has visited/met people who have experienced it in real life instead of hearing it from someone who just supports the issue of human/sex trafficking. Before I heard her today, I just had a broad sense of what it was and hearing her cleared up some of the confusion because the first time I heard about it was a couple years ago when I did not truly understand it so bring it up again made a difference to me.

  3. I really learned a lot today listening to Mrs. Shirai. It was really interesting to see her reason for interest in the subject of sex trafficking. Before this I didn't really understand what it truly was. So hearing Mrs. Shirai explain the cause, proccess, result, and response to sex traffing affected me more then I would have expected. It made me want to do something about it. I love her organization's goal of providing women with a means of escaping a life of prostitution. The fact that people with her backgrounds would go into red light districts and talk to prostitues amazes me... it is so caring and kind. I also thought that she had a really good point on the prejudices against Christianity. There is a group called "Beware of Christians" that said the same thing. However, instead of not calling themselves CHristians, the group is finding out how to become true Christians and show people God's word, love and mercy. It would be interesting if I could show one of their videos. To me it is always a good idea to listen to others Christian's perspectives of situations and projects, so having Mrs. Shirai come in and talk really benefited me.

  4. Today's presentation by Mrs. Jency Shirai covered a good number of ideas, all related to the topic of human trafficking. There were many different points made and the one that held strongest in my mind was that everyone is supposed to focus on one particular subject, what some refer to as their calling. As Mrs. Shirai mentioned, there are people in the world who believe that their calling is, like herself, to go to, say, India to help girls in the sex trade in local Red Light Districts. There are so many options for people and so many possible outcomes for every individual's life, and each person should find one outlet to focus on so they don't overload themselves. Everybody has limitations. If a person is to find their calling in something like the Indian Sex Trafficking issue, by all means, they should commit 100%, like Mrs. Shirai. Mrs. Shirai covered so many more topics than just this, yet, for some reason, this sole point stuck with me more than any of the others.

  5. I really enjoyed Mrs. Jency Shirai talk about sex trafficking today. It really inspired me to want to help out with this cause. I learned there are two types of trafficking sex and labor. I really thought it was interesting that sex trafficking happens to more minors than adults. Before Mrs. Shirai came I had no idea about sex trafficking except in the movie taken. I learned that the red light area is wear people get sold. It really tore me up when I heard that at least ten thousand men come a day to these red light areas. I really loved hearing about Mrs. Shirai visit to India and the two main programs that went on to help sex trafficking there. These two programs are free set and Calcutta arts. In the end of class today we talked about how we thought Jesus would be in the red light areas helping and healing these women. I really do think if he was a man on earth today he would be in areas like those in India. I am really grateful that Mrs. Shirai got to come and speak to us about this awful thing.

  6. I think that Mrs. Jency did an amazing job today. She presented the issue of sex trafficking in a very real way. She taught me way more about sex trafficking then I knew going into class today. I learned about red light areas and more specific details about what happens within these areas. I was in shock with how many women and men are involved in this harmful thing. I found it very interesting to hear that some woman are more afraid of the unknown and would rather stay living the same lifestyle of sex trafficking than start a new life of freedom. Free set and Love Calcutta Arts are two organizations that are helping girls and young women get out of the harmful slavery they have been apart of. Free set is trying to gather and grow to be a large number of free girls while Love Calcutta Arts is smaller and is only made of twenty girls but focus's on more of a personal level. Mrs. Jency works with Better Way Imports which mission is to help support the women that are getting sex trafficked by selling the products that the girls have hand-made. I feel that she is doing amazing things and helping the girls in a great way. Mrs. Jency has been called to help girls that are being sex trafficked specifically in India. Jesus calls all of his people to do something for the greater good but he has made it so that different people are called to focus on specific areas which have been laid on their hearts.
